New Shoes make Hard Work

I finally had the chance to try out my new pair of runners. At first I thought they were too big. After half a mile I thought they were too small. Then the right one seemed to fit, but the left one felt totally wrong. Then the toes on my left foot went numb (well, it was a very cold day). Then the toes on my right foot followed suit. Eventually, I felt better, but the shoes were never comfortable. I’m sure they will feel better after a while, but I guess my quest for the perfect pair of shoes has not yet come to an end.

I did 8 miles, and initially I felt I was crawling along at snail’s pace. When I reach the turnaround point and checked my time I realised that I was nearly doing 8-minute miles. Funny, I have no idea why I felt I was so slow. Maybe it was the shoes, who knows.

The achilles didn’t bother me, but I have a new pain, this time in my left quads. It’s definitely not the same problem I had a few weeks ago with my hamstring. It is a nagging pain in the front of my left upper leg, about 5 inches above the knee. It is quite painful when I start my run, but seems to get better after a while. I’ve felt some pain in that area for two weeks or so, and it seems to be getting worse rather than better. I can still feel it now, 10 hours after the run. I seem to collect running injuries at a rather alarming rate. This one is definitely not going to stop me from running. Injuries like that disappear after a while. Right? Right?

Anyway, this week I’ll have another go at 20 miles, most likely on Tuesday because the weather forecast for the second part of the week is pretty bad, and I have already covered more miles in rain than I care to even think about.

29 Jan: 8 miles, 1:05, 8:07 pace

  1. There is pain somewhere always, keep posting where they are and when to study them.
Maybe the need of new shoes made some of this pains to appear, I have new shoes to, let's see if it improves now.

  2. I hate breaking in new shoes. Running shoes are devilish. You were probably so focused on the new feel you didn't notice the smoke coming out of you as you cranked it!

  3. When I have a new shoe I spend my running time asking to myself: did I take the right decision? Do these shoes fit? Why I didn't buy the other pair? However last summer I found the perfect shoes for my feet and I bought other 3 (yes three) pairs of them to be sure for long time again (Saucony Boyleston for 44 euro).

  4. Great pace! Give these shoes a week and see how it goes. Quad pain shouldn't come from shoes. May be downhills?

  5. If the shoe don't get better, you can always call the company, I did that with a New Balance shoe. They felt fine, but for some reason after each run, my left heel was always so sore. The company sent me an exchange form, so I exchanged them!
Massage the pain area, maybe they just want some TLC. :)

  6. Have you tried going into a specialty running store and asking for help? I finally found my shoes that way after years of settling for ok shoes. Frustrating - no doubt! Hopefully all these little pains will go away! Your runs are pretty quick!

  7. I feel your shoe pain. Over that past 2 years I have tried 5 pairs. The ones I can deal with for now, wearing blister band aids, are Brooks. Then agai, I just started developing hip pain...my search isnt' over yet. I would love to know what you settle on.

  8. a sports massage might help the issue in your quad...it's most likely just a really tight muscle. you could hire some of those faries that live along the lake to rub you down, right?
